Government Plans Tougher Laws on Fake News Under OSA Amendments

The Government is set to introduce stricter regulations through proposed amendments to the Online Safety Act (OSA), aimed at curbing the spread of fake and unverified news. A senior official stated that the changes will target those responsible for creating false information that is later broadcast as authentic, often causing harm to individuals.

The official highlighted that much of the misinformation originates on social media before being aired as verified news, leading to significant personal damage. A committee led by Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne has reviewed the amendments and will submit its report this month, after which Cabinet approval will be sought.

The revised bill will address shortcomings in the original legislation and is expected to be presented in Parliament in February.
