Democratic People’s Forum Activists Attacked by Weerawansa Group

By Niranjala Ariyawansha –

Members of the National Freedom Front (NFF) has allegedly attacked a group from the Democratic People’s Forum, which consists of civil and political activists as well as former members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) who were involved in the 1971 rebellion, engaged in distributing leaflets.
This leaflet, which was titled ‘Ten Questions for Wimal Weerawansa and Vasudeva prior to the Yakshagamanaya’ was being distributed among the public at Nugegoda yesterday, in conjunction with the meeting held in support of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Convener of the Democratic People’s Forum, Kelly Senanayake, told Ceylon Today the group assaulted a member of their Forum and grabbed the leaflets they had in their possession.

“When we complained to the Nugegoda Police Post, the police advised members of the NFF. They also told us to lodge a complaint with the Mirihana Police. Accordingly, we made a complaint to the Mirihana Police as well,” Senanayake said.

He charged, NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa, Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Udaya Gammanpila and Leader of the New Democratic Left Front, Vasudeva Nanayakkara are attempting to regain power, stating that the defeat of former President Rajapaksa occurred due to a conspiracy.

“Maithripala Sirisena and his group are still enjoying the bliss of victory. They have forgotten the fact that we all got together and attempted to defeat not only Rajapaksa. We should defeat the political process which they maintained as well.”

He further said that they expect to reveal to the people the accusations against groups who have been blamed for being corrupt during the previous era of administration by distributing leaflets.

In response to an inquiry we made, Media Spokesman of the NFF, Mohamed Muzamil said, they categorically reject this accusation.
“We got to know that a complaint had been lodged with the police against our members. The police informed us about it. We were not involved in such an assault. The police, instead of taking action against members of the Democratic People’s Forum who distributed the leaflets containing inaccurate accusations, have pressured our members,” Muzamil said.

Anyhow, it has been stated in these leaflets a number of accusations of corruption which were made by public by referring them to the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission and the Criminal Investigation Department during the immediate past.

Kalyananda Perera accuse Wimal Weerawansa for hindering the Democratic People’s Forum

kalyaMembers of the Democratice People’s Forum came under an attack at Nugegoda on the 18th when distributing leaflets. When distributing a leaflet stating “A questionnaire to Wimal Weerawansa and Vasudewa before the Yakshagamanaya” three members of the DMF were threatened and snatched the leaflets.

Kalyananda Perera who got injured during the attack spoke to us.

Democratic People’s Forum printed few leaflets containing national frauds committed by the UPFA regime. The caption of the leaflet was “Ten questions Wimal and Vasudewa should reply” That was a questionnaire leaflet consisting of national frauds committed during the last regime. The Rajapaksa regime owes Rs. 1500 million to the National Transport Board, 500 million to the Rupavahini Corporation, travelling cost in the helicopter and further the previous regime has to pay millions of rupees to state institutions. We at DPF were distributing leaflets containing this information.

We started to distribute the leaflets by 8AM. By about 9.15 five people came and snatched my leaflets near the Nugegoda bo-tree. I asked why you snatch the leaflets, what is the problem? We are not doing anything illegal. We have the freedom to express our opinion. They said you can’t do like this because we are having our meeting today we cannot allow you to distribute here. I asked what happen if we distribute? They said if you distribute we will attack you. I asked, what is the right you have to attack us? They said they are from the police. When they spoke about the meeting and from their behaviors and attitude we realized that they were not from the police but few mobsters who were arranging the meeting in Nugegoda.

Except them there is no necessity for others to stop us from distributing the leaflets. One person said what you are doing is wrong and caressed my cheeks and slapped me. I could not realize what was happening. They were mobsters hired by Wimal weerawansa to attack opposition politicos when he was in power. I was perplexed how can this gallery Wimal still continue these when they are not in power? I immediately told what happened to a nearby policeman. The policemen caught two mobsters and took them to the Nugegoda police check point. I explained the situation at the police and they told me to lodge an entry in the Mirihana Police. I went to the Mirihana police and lodged an entry.

I cannot really imagine how this Wimal Weerawansa can continue his mobster politics without a political power. In case if Mahinda would have won on January 8th they would have destroyed us. Wimal has intoxicated with Rajapaksa power that he still continues his gallery politics during Maithri governance.
