CID Probes Security Chief Over Concealment of Easter Attack Evidence

Sri Lanka Brief, September 28, 2025 — A comprehensive investigation has been launched into a senior security official accused of concealing critical evidence related to the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of over 300 people.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is conducting an extensive inquiry into allegations that the official not only withheld key information but also aided subordinates in tampering with evidence. These actions are believed to have significantly obstructed the progress of the original investigation.

Following a report submitted to court, the security chief is expected to be summoned to the CID for formal questioning.

Multiple agencies have previously investigated the Easter Sunday attacks, but concerns over interference and obstruction have persisted. In November 2019, several officers involved in the probe were abruptly transferred from the CID to other police stations across the country.

Subsequently, Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara—who initially led the investigation—was taken into custody. Ironically, he now serves as the current Director of the CID and is overseeing the renewed inquiry into the same case.

The latest developments have reignited public scrutiny over accountability and transparency in one of Sri Lanka’s most devastating terrorist incidents.
