CIABOC Report: Majority of 41 Convicted Last Year Were Minor Staff

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) reported that 41 individuals were convicted on bribery and corruption charges last year, with most being minor staff attached to regional offices.

Between January 1 and November 30, CIABOC secured 35 convictions involving individuals in various roles, including sanitary labourers, linesmen, veterinary officers, police constables, and Agrarian Development Officers.

By the end of November, 270 cases were pending in High Courts, 16 in Magistrate Courts, and one before a Trial-at-Bar.

The Commission received a record 7,811 complaints during the year, but only 439 were referred for further investigation. At least 2,546 complaints remain under review.

Out of 119 raids conducted, 61 were successful, resulting in 76 arrests.

Financial recoveries included Rs 1,565,500 in fines and Rs 1,056,000 in penalties imposed by High Courts, alongside Rs 18,000 in compensation and Rs 150,000 confiscated through court orders. Magistrate Courts imposed an additional Rs 30,000 in fines.
