Bribery Case Against NPP Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody

  • CIABOC to file action in High Court over charges related to 2015 Fertiliser Corporation tender

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has decided to file action against Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody following corruption complaints over misappropriation of funds while serving at the Fertiliser Corporation in 2015, the Sunday Times learns.

The action is to be filed in the High Court against the minister and two others over charges of misappropriation of Rs 8 million.

Mr Jayakody had served as the head of the tender board that awarded a particular tender that came under scrutiny.

Investigations into the tender began after concerns emerged over payment procedures and the placement of the bond.

The Bribery Commission had resumed investigations, considering the previous investigations about the misappropriation.

Minister Jayakdoy would be the first minister in the current government to face corruption charges.

Earlier, Batticaloa District ITAK MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam had raised the issue in Parliament, claiming that a person interdicted over a financial fraud in the Fertiliser Corporation was serving in the NPP cabinet.

The move by the CIABOC comes in the wake of a string of corruption cases filed against ministers of the previous government.
