President Mahinda Rajapaksa today announced in Parliament that he was proposing the lifiting of emergency regulations.
“I am proposing to the House that Emergency Regulations should be lifted as I am statisifed that there is no necessity for the regulations”, he told Parliament.
“Therefore we have decided not to extend the state of emergency”, he said.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he was supporting the move, but called on the government to further relax regulations enabling the people to fully enjoy democracy.
“Though Emergency has been lifted do not think that it is the end, there are other steps to be taken to re-establish democracy”, he said.
