President Rules Out Political Intervention or Pardons After Court Verdicts Amid Gnanasara Thero Controversy

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has declared that the government will fully respect and implement the decisions of the judiciary and the Supreme Court, stressing that no individual should expect political intervention, special treatment, or a presidential pardon to overturn judicial rulings.

Addressing the Badulla District Women’s Conference, the President said all citizens must submit to the decisions of the courts and that the government would not seek to alter judicial outcomes or exempt anyone from punishment imposed through due process.

The President noted that recent law enforcement actions had generated controversy among individuals who previously believed they were beyond the reach of the law. He said that while legal accountability had often been weakened in the past by political influence and protective networks, the law is now being applied equally to all.

According to the President, resistance to ongoing legal processes largely stems from those who had benefited from privileges and undue protection under previous systems and are now facing the consequences of the law.

He explained that criminal proceedings are initiated by institutions established under the law, including the Attorney General’s Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, while investigations are conducted by the Police, the Criminal Investigation Department and other competent authorities.

The President emphasised that it is the responsibility of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, to independently examine such cases and deliver final judgments. These institutions, he said, have been granted the authority necessary to function free from political interference.

“Once the Supreme Court has delivered a decision, no one has the right to pressure the court or demand that its ruling be reversed,” he said, adding that while some may object to judicial decisions, the government will remain bound by and respect the conclusions of the courts.

President Dissanayake further stated that a society in which future generations enjoy genuine protection and justice can only be built through an unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.
