Jaffna, September 8, 2026 — The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has issued a statement welcoming the written update delivered by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the opening session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The update expressed disappointment over the lack of progress on accountability for wartime abuses in Sri Lanka and highlighted concerns of the Tamil community, including the release of military‑occupied lands, investigations into enforced disappearances, the release of political prisoners, and the unresolved Chemmani mass grave case.
Quoting the statement, ITAK General Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran noted: “We are deeply disappointed by the lack of any meaningful steps taken by the government on matters affecting the Tamil People even after almost two years in office.” The party emphasized that while it welcomed government action against bribery, corruption, and drug‑related underworld activities, it remained frustrated by the absence of progress on Tamil issues. ITAK also pointed to the long delay in holding provincial council elections, which it said undermines democratic representation in the North and East.
