Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman, a prominent opposition figure known for his outspoken criticism of government policies, has formally requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure his personal safety following a series of suspicious visits to his and his relatives’ residences.
Rahman told the Mawbima newspaper that over the past month, unidentified individuals claiming to be police officers visited his home and those of his relatives, including residences in Borella and Mount Lavinia, asking for personal details and his whereabouts. He said these visits occurred while he was attending the Parliamentary Budget Debate, and senior police officials later confirmed they had no knowledge of such operations.
The MP revealed that his official security detail had been withdrawn and expressed concern that these actions may be linked to attempts by groups affiliated with the government to intimidate him. He also highlighted inconsistencies in the visitors’ claims, including a false reference to a missing SIM card complaint, which he never lodged.
Rahman stated that despite contacting senior officers, including the DIG Mirihana Division and the CID Director, no one acknowledged authorising these visits. He has requested a formal investigation and report from the IGP, warning that the situation raises serious questions about political intimidation and the misuse of law enforcement.
