LLRC a waste of time and money: JVP

The JVP today charged that the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) process was a waste of time and money as the government did not appoint the LLRC to solve the national question that still existed even after the war is over. The party politburo in a statement claimed the LLRC was appointed to rescue the President from the crisis he was faced with.

It said the government tabled the LLRC report in Parliament last week as a result of external pressure.

It accused that the commission was not appointed with a genuine intention of studying the social, economic and political root causes that had been behind the secessionist conflict and finding a solution to it, rather it was appointed to free the government from the pressures and accusations exerted by foreign forces.

The party was of the view that the appointing of this commission was not an effort to look into the whole issue and find a solution, but it was just to handle some of the incidents that had taken place between February 21, 2002 and May 19, 2009, out of more than 30 years of secessionist conflict.

Many people who wanted to give evidence before the commission were unable to do so as they were not given adequate time for that, the JVP alleged.

It said the recommendations of a commission are not needed to resettle the IDPs, to give them their lands and other facilities, to solve the problems of the missing persons and to establish civil administration, democracy and good governance.

This was not a commission meant for the resolution of the national question that still exists or for reconciliation. It has even failed to even identify the core problem, the JVP statement said.
