Businessman given 6 months suspended sentence for slandering former state minister on social media.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage on 26th  sentenced businessman N. M. Paris to six months in prison for circulating misleading audio recordings about former State Minister and Member of Parliament Kader Mastan on WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media.

Kader Mastan contested the recent general election from the Sri Lanka Labour Party for the Vanni district  and won.

The Chief Magistrate, who  ordered the suspended the sentence for five years, has also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the suspect.

The Chief Magistrate had further ordered that all statements he had circulated on social media platforms in a manner that was defamatory of the complainant Member of Parliament be immediately removed.

Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage, having considered a complaint filed by Mr. Kader Mastan under Section 24 of the Online Security Act, No. 9 of 2024, has issued a conditional restraining order against the businessman, N. M. Paris, a resident of the Mannar area.

President’s Counsel Mohamed Ali Sabri appeared on behalf of Mr. Kader Mastan.
