Police figures reveal that the police spends nearly Rs.1000 million annually for 45 police vehicles and 530 police officers deployed to protect five former Presidents and a late president’s wife.

All expenses incurred by the police, including fuel issued by the police, salaries and allowances of police officers, electricity and water costs of the barracks and offices where the police officers stay, have been added to it.

Some former Presidents are even entitled to military protection and this does not include the fuel provided to those vehicles and the allowances and salaries paid to the military personnel. Also, these former presidents and the late President’s wife also get government vehicles and this does not include the expenses incurred for those vehicles and the staff.

Police said that the cost will be two or three times when all of that is added.

According to police information, about Rs.1500 million is spent on the purchase of medicines and other activities in the police hospital for the treatment of around 100,000 serving and retired officers of the Sri Lanka Police as well as the civil staff of the police.
