A Buddhist monk who attempted to use a loudhailer during a protest staged in front of the Prime Minister’s official residence located at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo was arrested today (12).
The protest was organized by Sri Lanka’s Inter University Students Federation (IUSF).
Members of the IUSF lead by a Buddhist monk gathered before Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence located at Wijerama Mawatha demanding solutions for a grievance faced by 2019 GCE Advanced Level Students.
The Monk who was arrested insisted that he needs to use a loudhailer to address those gathered.
However, police warned the monk on several occasions that a loud hailer cannot be used within the designated high security zone.
Furthermore police offered the monk in protest an opportunity to meet the Prime Minister, which was met without a response.
The monk was arrested as soon as he commenced utilizing the loud hailer, in direct disobedience of police orders.
