Sri Lanka wants to postpone the discussion on resolution 30/1 at UNHRC, until a new Govt is formed, says pro-Rajapaksa news site.

The government of  Sri Lanka has decided to refrain from discussing resolution 30/1 at the upcoming 43rd session of the UNHRC reports pro-Rajapaksa web site lankaeyewittness.  This is because the government does not want to respond to the Geneva resolution 30/1 at a time of a general election is to be held to elect a new government. The present parliament will be dissolved on 1st March this year and general election will be held at the end of April according to informed sources.

The 43rd session of the UNHRC begins on 24 February. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is scheduled to present a report on the progress of implementation of UNHRC resolution 30/1 in the first week of the 43rd session.

The website further reports that “according to unofficial sources, the government is going to propose that any discussion on UNHRC resolution 30/1 on Sri Lanka at the 43rd council session be postponed until next year or next session and to continue with the ongoing actions in relation to the resolution until a new government is formed.

“The president Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to reconsider and make a decision with regard to the Geneva resolution 30/1 once a new government with the parliamentary majority is formed.”

Gotabaya Rajapaksa government does not have a parliamentary majority right now.
