Electronic Media Journalist Questioned in Custody at Jaffna Police Station. An independent journalist from Jaffna was held up in custody at the Jaffna police station yesterday and questioned for three hours.
The particular journalist was arrested after the Jaffna Government Agent Imelda Sugumar made a complaint. He was arrested and taken to the police station and questioned for three hours.
The Northern Province governor Chandrasiri had ruled out the Jaffna GA Imelda Sugumar individually meeting a British Parliamentarian team which had visited the peninsula two days ago. The governor had permitted the GA to meet the British Parliamentarian team in his office and in his direct supervision.
The incident had received wide publicity in the media and the GA had made the complaint in such an atmosphere.
In fact the GA who had contacted certain media houses earlier had said that she will never again meet the journalists.
The British team of Parliamentarians had then met the Bishop of Jaffna. The GA who was present at this meeting had scolded the journalists who were present there, and had made the complaint to the Jaffna police after this meeting.
Earlier the GA had made a complaint to the police when sexual and corruption charges were laid on the media resources training officer of the Jaffna campus by the press. This resulted in three electronic media journalists facing inquiries. The journalist who was questioned yesterday was among the three who were questioned earlier.
Meanwhile the journalist organizations of the Jaffna district have warned that targeting and threatening the journalists and taking revenge in such a fashion will only make the matter worst. The journalist of the Tamil diaspora who use their services to make use for sensational news gathering are now keeping silent, the Jaffna journalists lament.
Meanwhile it was the GTN which first reported this issue.
